What Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Left Behind: Honoring Teachers
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born in a small village in Tamil Nadu, India, on September 5, 1888. Even though he came from a poor family, he was a very smart student from the start. As he got older, he studied philosophy and became known around the world for his knowledge of both Indian and Western ideas.
Apart from being a brilliant thinker, Dr. Radhakrishnan was a much-loved teacher. He firmly felt that a better society is built in great part by educators. Teachers should be the brightest minds in the nation, he said.
He later on in life rose to be India’s second President. When friends and students wanted to celebrate his birthday, Dr. Radhakrishnan advised they honor instructors instead. For the job they produce, he felt teachers should be honored and acknowledged. Since 1962, September 5 has therefore been observed as Teacher’s Day in India.
The life of Dr. Radhakrishnan is a wonderful illustration of how knowledge could transform one. With his knowledge and commitment to education, he motivated a lot of people; he is still regarded as a superb teacher and leader.
